K-12 OUTREACH
ACTIVITIES
The Harrisburg Chapter sponsors several annual K-12 outreach activities including Math Counts, Science Fair activities, the PA Statistics Poster Competition, and Teacher Preparation Workshops.
Science Fairs
Science Fair Workshops for school teachers and students and Science Fair judging organized by John Rinehart. In the Fall school teachers are invited to participate in a workshop titled
Data Analysis for Science Fair Projects. The Science Fairs are held in the Spring. The Chapter gives special awards to middle school and high school students demonstrating the "Best application of statistical methods" in their science fair projects. A winner and several honorable mentions are selected in each category and awarded certificates. Winners also receive a $100 US savings bond.

The PA Statistics Poster Competition
The Pennsylvania Statistics Poster
Competition organized by Tom Short. A statistics poster is a display
containing graphs that summarize data, provide different points of view,
and answer some question (or questions) about the data. The poster competition
is open to all K-12 students in Pennsylvania. It takes place in the
spring semester and has been running continuously for 6 years. Entries
are judged in four categories: Category 1 - Grades K-3, Category 2 -
Grades 4-6, Category 3 - Grades 7-9, and Category 4 - Grades 10-12. Past
winners are displayed on the competition web site .

MathCounts
Mathcounts for middle school students. The Chapters gives special awards to two students who
fare best on the problems of a statsitical nature. Winners
receive a $100 US savings bond.
