2004 Science Fair Awards

York County Science and Engineering Fair, March 8, 2004

Junior Division
Winner:  "How Static Affects Random Selection" by Hannah Zellers, York Suburban
Hannah used standard deviation to show that altered ping-pong balls were indeed "outliers" in a frequency-of-selection distribution.

Honorable Mention:  "Resistance Effects on Bicycle Velocity" by Brice Collamer, Southwestern
Brice used both standard error of the mean and linear regression to evaluate the effects of two experimental variables - rider profile and tire pressure.

Senior Division
Winner: "The Effect of Temperature and pH on Dissolved Oxygen in Lake Redman" by Brittany Hengst, Dallastown
Brittany used (and explained) linear regression to evaluate the relationships she found in her observations.

Honorable Mention:  "Sweet Success: A New Way to Determine the Concentrations of Sugar Solutions" by Sarah Groth, Dallastown
Sarah used linear regression on experimental observations to establish "calibration curves" for determining unknown concentrations of sugar.

Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair, March 15, 2004

Junior Division
Winner:  "Which Coating Offers the Best Protection Against Rust?" by Avi Gewirtz, Yeshiva Academy
Avi evaluated his experimental results using box-and-whisker plots to compare group means and comment on "significant" differences between various
anti-rust treatments.

Honorable Mention:  "Easy to Impress" by Breton Asken, Good Shepard School
Breton used t-tests to compare group means from his experiment on how the source of "good advice" can influence agreement and behavioral change.

Honorable Mention:  "Does the Price of an Alkaline Battery Affect Its Performance" by Rachael Schulder, Yeshiva Academy
Rachael used box-and-whisker plots to evaluate differences in the mean performance of several brands of battery.

Senior Division
Winner:  "Winning the Uphill Battle Against Runoff" by Daniel Siegel, Cedar Crest
Daniel made good use of analysis of variance to examine the effects of slope, humus content, and compaction on rainwater runoff and retention.

Honorable Mention:  "Reward and Punishment" by Jill Martini, Bishop McDevitt
Jill used analysis of variance to compare reward vs. punishment strategies to influence the outcomes of second grade math testing.
