AIMS is a mentoring/enrichment
tutorial program for school children in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This
program was started by Dr. Harris Imadojemu in 1993. The focus of the
program is mentoring, tutoring, and math enrichment activities for middle
school and high school.
Faculty and students of Penn State
Harrisburg and high school math teachers in the area serve as volunteer tutors
and big brothers/sisters to the children. We hope to provide a foundation
for a lifelong interest in science and mathematics for all participants and
to encourage science, mathematics, and engineering as possible career choices.
The program's objectives include:
- strengthening student commitment to remain
in school and continue the study of science and mathematics;
- illustrating the importance of science
and mathematics in our daily lives;
- exposing students to a broad range of
activities in science, mathematics, and technology including the research
process and interactions with practicing scientists, engineers, and mathematicians;
- heightening student awareness of science
and matehmatics disciplines as potential career choices, including attention
to precollege science teaching; and
- providing field trips to local engineering
firms and research laborities.
Regular activities are conducted at Penn State
Eastgate on Saturdays from
9:00 am - 11:00 am followed
by lunch. The exact schedule changes
every year.
